Carbon Trading

Since 1850, 10% of the carbon added to the atmosphere as a result of human activity has come from the soil.

Since World War Two UK Farming has added 100 Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere per Hectare of continuous arable land.

Deforestation, grassland degradation and Intensive Arable Farming have promted losses of Biomass and Carbon Dioxide from our soils, equivalent to 30-40% of cumulative fossil fuel emissions.

Its not all bad news.  We all know that plants remove Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere by photosynthesis.  New research is also showing that Bacteria that form part of the natural soil structure are increaing the amount of carbon that can be stored within the soil

The key is organic matter.  Organic matter encourages diverse soil life and is not only the key to building carbon levels but also the key to a long term sustainable low input grazing systems.

Unfortunately land is a finite source and this type of permanant pasture requires a lower stocking rate which can effect the profitability of the farming unit.

We are investigating the possibility of utilising this type of carbon storage to supply the land owner with an additional income stream.
